Icesailing for New
Year's Day 2006 weekend
After a few days of warm temperature during the Christmas Holiday, the slush has refreezed. The ice condition is reasonable. The further you go out on the lake, the smoother surface is. This weekend we had a good group of kite & snowfer sailors enjoying the long holiday weekend. On Monday we had a good north easterly wind by the afternoon it was 30 km and gusting to approximately 50 km. Some of the ice fishermen started to park on the ice at the end of the Glenwoods Drive in Keswick. The forecast for the next four days looks very good. We are doing demos and rentals, if you want to try it out, please let us know in advance so we can prepare the equipment. |

November 27, 2005, first day of icesailing
At Cook's Bay, Keswick, Lake Simcoe, Ontario Charles and his sailing buddies were eager to start the first day of icesailing for Sunday, November 27, 2005. The forecast called for southernly winds at approximately 20 km. However, the weather didn't cooperate as the wind didn't come thru as predicted. You could see from the sad look on their faces (third picture from the bottom left hand corner). Were crossing our fingers that the ice will hold since their calling for mild temperatures in the next few days. They were the very first sailors to walk on the ice. The ice was tested for thickness by drilling holes in certain spots. It was between two to four inches thick covered with snow on top about an inch to two in some areas. The snow might help preserve the ice from melting once the warm temperature passes thru. Warning, please don't go on the ice it is still not 100% safe. They were taking a big risk by being on it. Click on picture to enlarge. If you live close by Toronto or want to join and sail with us this winter season, please click here to enter a mailing group form. Fill in the form and click submit. We will send an e-mail to inform you were the group will be sailing for that weekend. |

Safety Precaution
Always check the ice condition before you start sailing. Drill holes in the area where you are going to sail in to test ice thickness. Especially important in the beginning of the season. Make sure the ice thickness is not less than 4 inch and hard (known as black ice). Never go on the ice alone. Wear a life jacket, helmet and have an ice pick with you at all times. Ice/snow sailing & kitesurfing are a wonderful winter sport. Play it safe at all times. |
